Tailings dewatering is a new process of tailings disposal that has gradually emerged in China in recent years. At present, mine tailings treatment mainly includes chemical neutralization method, physical isolation method, surface solidification and vegetation restoration method.

1 Chemical neutralization method
The chemical neutralization method is to use the addition of alkaline substances (such as lime, carbonate rock, etc.) and the mine tailings to pile up and neutralize the reaction, thereby achieving the control of the generation of acid mine wastewater. The tailings are mixed and neutralized to increase the environmental pH value of the mine tailings, and the increase in pH can effectively reduce the microbial activity that may play an oxidizing role, thereby inhibiting its oxidation.

2 Physical isolation method
The so-called physical isolation method is to use water, gravel, sludge, wood waste and other materials to cover the surface of the mine tailings to isolate its contact with oxygen, thereby controlling its production of acid mine wastewater. For example, the tailings of a mine in Quebec, Canada, are directly discharged into a permanent reservoir surrounded by earth dams, so as to realize the anti-oxidation treatment of the mine tailings of water isolation.

3 Vegetation restoration method
Compared with other methods, the vegetation restoration of tailings is more environmentally friendly and cheaper. Generally speaking, there are two main methods for vegetation restoration of tailings. One is to cover the tailings surface with a layer of soil of appropriate thickness, and then plant plants. Another method is to plant acid-base and heavy-metal-tolerant plants directly on the tailings, but the key technical difficulty is to select and cultivate super-enriched plants that are acid-base- and heavy metal-tolerant to suit the local tailings environment.
